Your Questions, Our AnswersAppliances
We accept stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers. Refrigerators must be drained of the freon and an accompanying statement from a certified freon remover must be present. We can remove the freon for a $25 fee.
Batteries
We accept lead-acid automotive batteries and pay the current market price. We pay cash on-site.
Cardboard
What types of cardboard can be recycled? Almost all of it but there are a few restrictions.
You can not recycle cardboard with any wax coating. If it has come into contact with food, it is best to toss it.
Packing tape on the cardboard is okay but if you are like some, you will pull it off anyway. You should recycle brown packing paper with cardboard.
Car Seats (childs)
Unfortunately, there is currently no option for recycling car seats.
E-Waste
Currently, the only option for e-waste is to dispose of it at the Logan Landfill. Visit GallatinSolidWaste.org for more information.
Glass recycling
We will accept glass for a small fee here at our recycling yard. The fee helps cover the cost of transporting it out of state to be recycled. You can also sign up for curbside service with Gone Green or J& K Recyclers as they have a sort program.
$7 for up to 50 lbs. and then .10 per lb. thereafter.
Recycling glass is challenging. When it breaks, it contaminates other recyclables when commingled. Contaminated materials end up as trash. This is why you must use a dual-stream program to recycle glass. It can never be placed in a single-stream or commingled bin.
Recycled glass is most commonly used as a road base or around foundations in new building construction. For us here in the Rocky Mountains, there is lots of great gravel available, which tends to be less messy than glass. So, selling crushed glass as a commodity is a challenge here.
There are however markets that do desire crushed glass. Our glass is crushed and shipped to Momentum Glass Recycling in Utah. They recycle it to a particular grade to be used in fiberglass insulation and to make new glass bottles.
Glass recycling is not profitable, which means if you can’t cover your transportation and crushing costs, then it ends up a negative commodity. This is why we have to charge to accept it.
Metal Caps and Lids
Metal lids and bottle caps are not recyclable. Many metal caps have a silicon type lining which would be burned off during the recycling process, however, they are very small and can get caught in the recycling equipment. They can sometimes fly out and injure people and have the potential to jam the machines.
Our metals go to Seattle for recycling and currently Seattle does not allow caps or lids to be recycled.
Motor Oil
You can recycle your motor oil at the Bozeman Convenience Site, the City of Bozeman Shops or at most oil change facilities.
Plastic
Plastics #1 and #2 bottle shape only are recyclable. Any #3 – #7s or other #1 and #2 plastics are not recyclable, they must go in the trash.
Why the cold shoulder towards the higher digits? Plastics are traded as a commodity and currently, there is no market, or desire, for #3 – #7 plastic. Most plastic is shipped to China where historically it has been recycled and then it is used to create packaging. A few years ago, The Green Fence followed by the Green Sword was instituted where they changed their import restrictions and are now very specific on what they will allow into the country.
Accepted plastic must be pelletized or chipped prior to export to China (however they are currently not importing or accepting plastic). Since chipping the plastic was not a previous requirement, it has launched a new industry in the United States. Facilities are being built but the future of plastic as a commodity is in question.
Plastic Clamshells & Salad Containers
Plastic clamshells like the kind that fruit and to go food come in are not recyclable. This includes the plastic tubs you might purchase salad greens in.
These containers tend to wrap around other items when they are bailed for shipping. When they are sorted at a materials recovery facility, or MRF, if they are wrapped around other items they are many times thrown away as trash.
These containers do not make the recycling effort for efficient, therefore they are not good in the recycling chain. If you can not reuse them, they must be thrown away.
Plastic Grocery Bags
Plastic grocery bags can only be recycled at the following locations in Bozeman: Safeway, Albertson’s, Walmart, Lowe’s
There is currently an overflow of this type plastic bag, so if you can not reuse them, you may consider using reusable shopping bags.
Plastic Pallet Wrap
You can recycle plastic pallet wrap at the Bozeman Lowes on North 19th Street.
Scrap Metal
We buy scrap metals by the pound. You can recycle many different types of metals and we take it all. We pay the current market price and pay cash on site.
Our mobile buyback truck will come to you, pick up your scrap metals and pay you in cash the following week. We will either weigh your metals on-site or bring it back and weight at our yard.
Our scrap metal is shipped to a facility in the northwestern United States for processing.
Styrofoam Packing Peanuts
These are not recyclable but you can try to find a reuse for them. Get creative, save them for the next time you ship a package or try the Bozeman UPS store on Huffine.
Vehicles
